24/01/2025: We were recommended to this restaurant by some good friends with a similar liking for exceptional food. We booked the Golden Package which included a pick up and return in a vintage car along with a 3 course meal and wine included. The driver arrived punctually at the arranged time, when we got to the restaurant our table was laid up beautifully with a golden table cloth and flower petals. Menus were brought to us along with a glass of Champagne and an Amuse Bouche. There was a choice of starter, main & desert all of which were very tasty and beautifully presented. There was also a sorbet between starter and main. Along with the food there was a white wine, red wine and also a Madeira wine with desert with wines being topped up as we finished the glass. Service was as you would expect in a fine dining restaurant but the best part was that although this was not a cheap night out it was not what I would consider the cost of fine dining. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special night.

18/01/2025: In einem wunderschönen Ambiente haben wir hervorragend gegessen. Mein Oktopusrisotto war zum Niederknien. Sollten wir wieder her kommen ist der Besuch dieses Restaurants schon eingeplant.

01/01/2025: Google értékelések/cikkek alapján esett erre a snack bárra a választásunk. Szerettünk volna egy olyan helyen ebédelni, ami nem a luxi kategória és hozza a “snack bár” jelleget. Kissé kintebbre esik a várostól és elsőre habár nem túl bizalom gerjesztő, hidd el, hogy jó lesz. Amúgy fullon volt, mikor megérkeztünk. Majd’ 30 percet vàrtunk, de tök jó élmény volt. Kedves a személyzet, finomak az ételek, a mennyiség is tökéletes. Árban pedig majdhogynem verhetetlen, eddig még nem volt, ami lekörözte volna. :)

31/12/2024: It's always fun to see the look on the face of the staff at a restaurant/cafe when you rock up and say: "Table for 13 please", but the staff of Bela 5 were unfazed and shuffled things around a little and soon accommodated us. It was really buzzing and is clearly popular with locals (always a good sign) as well as tourists - I assume the fact that it's pretty highly placed on the Tripadvisor league table generates a certain amount of business. Service was friendly and fun, and they were able to accommodate the two veggies in the party with no problem at all. A lot of us had the various steak-filled Bolo de Caco, though there were a few variations (including one who had a tuna steak instead of beef in hers, and liked it a lot) plus loads of hand-made chips (truly excellent). When I asked for a "large beer", the question came: litre or half-litre - a new one on me but I went for the half. Everything arrived quickly and was truly delicious. One of the party asked for some hot sauce: one of them was clearly for fun and came with a strict warning (I tried it too - I've seen less brutal military weapons) but the other was more sane and very tasty. Bela 5 was by a long way the best lunch venue in our five-day stay in Funchal. It's popular, the service is great, the food's amazing, and unbelievably the bill for the 13 of us was below EUR100. Go the Bela 5. It's fabulous.

16/10/2024: Sorry I don’t share the opinions of recent reviewers. I thought this was distinctly average, from an indifferent welcome, to a pretty poor choice of courtyard tables, to some pretty average food and wine. So if you want something average and reasonably priced, near the cruise terminal and marina, this fits the bill. If you want classy, fine dining, keep looking!

15/10/2024: This has now become my very favourite restaurant in Funchal, and many other people's too. In spite of being quite large, it is usually quite full, so it's best to book your table. Everything here is really fresh,as all ingredients are very carefully selected daily by the owner, whilst the cooking and artistic presentation of each dish, resembles the original paintings which adorn the restaurant's walls. Service by the attentive staff is elegant and extremely stylish. The waterfront location, being immediately opposite the Marina, makes it both easy to find, but also very memorable.There's an exceptional wine list, but in truth, the carefully sourced red and white Douro house wine, is a joy to compliment one's meal with. The final bonus is the bill at the meal's end. This represents astonishingly good value, for dining at this exceptional level.

09/01/2025: Nos encontramos con O Visconde cuando estuvimos en Funchal el año pasado y disfrutamos almorzar allí, así que volvimos un par de veces este año. La primera vez, los dos tuvimos opciones del menú del día: mi esposa tenía pollo y yo tenía el pescado con sarro, y ambos estaban muy buenos. Hoy elegimos del menú principal: mi esposa tenía la carne en un pincho y yo tenía el pescado sable Visconde. La carne estaba muy buena -probé algunas- y venía con papas fritas y ensalada. Mi pescado estaba en una salsa de tomate, cebolla y plátano, que era un poco diferente pero bueno. Al final, acabo de tomar un café, pero mi esposa tenía pastel de maracuyá, que vino como una rodaja grande - muy húmedo y sabroso. Cuando le dijimos a la camarera que íbamos a casa mañana, nos dio un gran abrazo a los dos.

03/01/2025: Encontré este pequeño restaurante por casualidad y tan contentos de que lo hicimos, la comida era fantástica, un montón de ella también, la sopa de cebolla era tan sabrosa como lo era el pollo en salsa de hongos y la carne asada, los propietarios eran encantadores, nos hicieron sentir tan bienvenidos, en realidad comimos aquí dos veces en nuestras vacaciones, cuando volvimos en la segunda visita nos recibieron como viejos amigos, absolutamente hizo nuestra noche, recomendó a dónde ir a ver fuegos artificiales en la víspera de Año Nuevo que tomamos su consejo y estaban en el lugar, sin duda volveremos aquí en nuestras próximas vacaciones a Madeira

12/10/2024: Prepararon la comida muy buena, gran elección de vinos. Hicimos un entrante, plato principal, unas botellas de vino y desierto por unos 70 euros. Para empezar hicimos comida compartida y plato principal una selección del menú. Había música en vivo en esta tarde de viernes, era una música de fondo que no era molesta durante la conversación. Así que sí, recomendaría este restaurante

07/10/2024: Excelente comida. Estábamos con 4 amigos, y probamos sopa y algunos platos principales, el atún estaba muy bueno, la carne reginal era excelente, pulpo Mucho mejor que tuvimos en el centro de Funchal . . lugar perfecto para tener una buena comida tradicional.

14/01/2025: Seven of us booked almost a year ahead for the Christmas Eve dinner. There was a great ambiance, enhanced by the saxophonist and the impromptu dancing between tables. The food was excellent. No wonder some people come here year after year.

13/01/2025: Great night in a fantastic restaurant, fabulous food and atmosphere, very generous, when my husband had a paring meal with wine they also gave me some, we were recommended this place and would highly recommend it to everyone, thanks for a wonderful evening.

01/12/2024: Mi marido reservó este restaurante y no me decepcionó. El personal era acogedor y la vibra era buena. Nos sentamos en el patio. Me tomé un cóctel de saltamontes, que era exuberante y mi marido tenía una vieja moda. Empezamos con un bouche divertido de sarro de ternera. Luego tomamos sopa de espárragos (para el marido) y yo tomé la bresaola. Seguimos con un risotto para mi marido y los raviolis para mí. La comida que presentamos maravillosamente y sabía divino. Disfrutamos mucho de nuestra comida y volveremos

02/11/2024: Super leckeres Essen, auch für Vegetarier. Der Gruss aus der Küche ist auch immer eine tolle Überraschung. Alles was ich hier gegessen habe war von alles bester Qualität. Immer wieder gerne. Vielen Dank für das tolle Geschmackserlebnis. Tipp am Ende noch einen Espresso,dazu gibt's dann eine köstliche selbstgemacht Praline 😋

28/03/2024: Os preços podem estar acima da média da região, mas a relação preço-desempenho é excelente. O ambiente é sofisticado, o serviço é simpático e acolhedor, a vista através da fachada de vidro sobre o vale até ao mar é magnífica - mesmo no escuro (mar de luzes). Sentimo-nos como se estivéssemos num restaurante muito mais caro e acabámos por pagar pouco menos de 50€ por uma entrada (bolo de caco), dois aperitivos (poncho), uma grande água com gás e dois pratos principais com peixe. Recomendação 100%. Existe até um estacionamento subterrâneo de onde você pode chegar ao restaurante e voltar em local seco se chover.

25/11/2024: Fantastisk mad, beef on a stone og filet mignon. Super service og atmosfære, kan varmt anbefales. Ligger lidt gemt i en sidegade.

16/11/2024: Pyszne jedzenie wspaniala atmosfera mila obsługa. Najlepsza w Funchal espada z bananami w sosie marakuja. Dodatkowa atrakcja są dwie kolorowe żywe papugi ary z którymi można sobie zrobić zdjęcie.

24/12/2024: Bread with garlic and the garlic prawns were very good. Main dish; scabbard fish with tropical sauce and banana was ok. But the vegetables were terrible! No respect for different cooking times or that salt is needed when cooking to get any taste. Service was kind and attentive. Though they seemed unorganized at times. Picture of the restaurant on the fork is the “best corner” in the back. And not representative for most of the room.

01/01/2025: From the moment I was seated at the chef's table in Kampo, I knew I was in for an exceptional evening. The expansive counter, filled with fellow diners, offered a lively atmosphere, and the best part was watching the dishes being prepared. It gave me a real sense of the menu and helped me decide what to try. The sourdough bread—wow! It was simply unforgettable. I wish they sold it as a takeaway; it was that good. I started with two appetizers: the “deconstructed oxtail ravioli” and the foie gras with banana and passion fruit—both creative and flavorful. To finish, the dark chocolate dessert was a perfect finale, and the glass of red wine was so smooth and drinkable it was almost dangerous! If I had to nitpick, I’d suggest replacing the laminated QR code menu with something more elegant. I noticed a paper food and cocktail menu board being presented to some guests, but I wasn’t offered it until I returned two days later. Additionally, swapping out the paper towels for cotton ones would elevate the experience further, as the paper ones felt out of place in an otherwise luxurious setting. The staff were professional and polite throughout, and my experience was so fantastic that we vowed to return—and we did. On our second visit, we managed to snag a late lunch slot at 4:15 p.m., and it was even better, although admittedly, it took a while to be seated. With fewer guests, the service was even more attentive, and the food once again exceeded expectations. The white chocolate and black olive dessert was a revelation—so incredible it nearly brought me to tears. My advice? Be adventurous and try something unexpected—you won’t regret it. I absolutely loved Kampo. It was the highlight of our Christmas break, and I would return to Madeira in a heartbeat just to dine here again. Sensational in every way, and undoubtedly, the best on the island once a few minor tweaks are addressed.

02/01/2025: What a great discovery! Having walked past this restaurant for almost 7 years I recently read a post that highly recommended it. I am Gluten Free, and it appeared there was a good food selection. My wife isn’t GF so her choice was extensive. From the minute we booked online, then arrived - the service was second to none. As for the food, a member of staff took me through my options and what would work for me, and how many dishes we needed for 2 adults. If we needed we could order more. We ordered a selection of Garlic bread (not for me 😢), Patatas Brava, Garlic Prawns, Vegetable Timpale, and steak. Absolutely delicious. Washed down with a delightful Monte Vehlo red wine. The service was excellent throughout the night and the team really appeared to focus on their customers without being in your face. Many thanks all - will be back!

16/12/2024: We ate here twice in one week and each visit was enjoyable. The tapas were tasty and varied. Wine reasonably priced at €21 a bottle. Staff were friendly and efficient. If we return to Funchal a visit is a must.

22/01/2025: Bel endroit et service efficace et accueillant. En revanche cuisine décevante. Plats qui se veulent originaux avec surabondance de couleurs et d’ingrédients mais qui manquent de finesse. Alliance des saveurs absente. Dommage.

10/12/2024: Expectativas altas, preço alto, refeição média. Bom tártaro de atum, oferta interessante de entrada. Rissoto de açafrão e gengibre a acompanhar um pargo muito mau. Boa carne. Caril verde, estava demasiado doce e a precisar de intensidade, em nada lembra a Tailândia. Preço muito elevado para a experiência

22/11/2024: This is the place to go. If you love great food, exceptional wine, and fantastic customer service with a bit of light-hearted banter, this is the place to be. We have just enjoyed a wonderful meal. I had the tuna steak with a herb crust and cooked in a light soya sauce the tuna melted in my mouth and the side helping of vegetables were fresh and tasty, hubby had the 3 peppered steak which he said was the best he's had in a long time, and trust me eat out alot. There's no wine list, but the selection is outstanding if you're not sure which wine you would like help is on hand, and they know their stuff. It's a must, well done madmarket we loved it.
