WE stumbled on this place while trying to avoid paying restaurant street prices for a simple lunch.
The locals seem to know about it because a number of them came here for meals and we could see why.
We had the delicious Portuguese sausage with salad and chips and a beer and barely paid E20 for both meals added together and we were even given a free appetiser of the famous local black scabbard fish which was delicious.
Outside seating just added to the atmosphere, we were practically the only tourists there and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Toilets were clean and well kept, service was good and the food was well cooked.
We would definitely suggest dropping in here for lunch where you get a taste of the real Funchal not tourist fare.
Fantastic little place that we discovered on our 1st day in Funchal. Very friendly service by the waitress who explained the local dishes and made recommendations. We ordered a mixture of plates to share, the chicken, sausage and the beef @ mushroom dish was excellent but despite 5 hungry people after an early flight we couldn’t finish it all off. A lot of the dishes come with lovely boiled potatoes, flavoursome rice and salad.
We liked it so much, 3 of us returned on 2 more occasions and it was lovely how the waitress remembered that our daughter didn’t like egg in her hamburger. She was very helpful with local knowledge and we had hoped to have popped in again before we left but sadly it didn’t fit in.
The prices are very good and it’s a place to sit amongst the locals and watch the world go by. Highly recommended.
