09/10/2024: This very special restaurant is really worth finding if you're not fortunate enough to be a guest at the truly excellent five star hotel, Quintinha Sao João, of which it is a part. Set in a quiet street in Funchal's finest residential neighborhood, and just a 15 minute walk from the Plaza shopping mall, it's probably worth investing 5 euros in a cab for your first visit. The restaurant's windows overlook the hotel's lovely gardens which are packed with beautiful flowers, orchids, and ancient trees. This very peaceful outdoor setting is nicely matched by the interior, where the tables are discreetly spaced to provide privacy to diners. The menu is very international, and includes European, Portuguese and Madeiran dishes, as well as exotic choices from Madeira. Felipe, the exceptionally talented young Chef de Cuisine, together with sous chef, Dora, really enjoys experimenting with tastes, so diners are truly rewarded by exploring his exciting menu. Apart from a first class a la carte, there's also a table d'hote menu, offering three choices of each course, which changes daily. There is of course a first class wine list, and standards of service, from the skilled and gifted waiting team, all carefully overseen by Maitre'd, also Filipe, is certainly a match for this restaurant's excellence.

20/06/2024: Set within the truly beautiful garden's of Funchal's excellent five star, Quintinha Soa João, a Morgadinha is a haven for gourmets, offering truly original interpretations of classic European cuisine, plus the exotic tastes of Goa. Filipe the gifted young Chef de Cuisine, offers diners a range of exciting dishes where the ingredients compliment and blend to stimulate the pallet. Whenever I experiment and try something different, that I have not previously experienced, I have never been disappointed. He has a talent for working with Seafood and fish certainly, but his prime beef fillet topped with fois gras, and his rack of lamb are unquestionably amongst the very finest I have ever enjoyed. The presentation of each dish is truly lovely and only adds tou pleasure. The waiting staff here really live up to the quality of the dining. Carefully overseen by the exceptional Maitre'd, yet another Filipe, they are, without exception, attentive, intuitive, and very prompt. Complimenting of dining, requires a wine list to match, and it is, of.course here. A broad selection of choice Portuguese wines, drawn from the very best regions, and finest producers. Please always book before you arrive, as a Morgadinha has a loyal and regular following amongst the local community. Also, it's just a stones from Funchal's centre, but worth the five or six euros cab fare, as it's set in a quiet and select residential district, and may prove a little difficult to locate on your initial visit.
