All the hotsy-totsy restaurants in Funchal get deservedly great reviews. However, I feel that the more 'straightforward' places can be overlooked or at the most given scant regard. So The Golden Island. The menu is varied and everything we have had is top class, from prawn Caesar salad to the burgers. It is cooked brilliantly and the presentation is mouth watering. Don't be fooled into thinking it's 'just a burger bar', it most certainly isn't. The staff are incredibly helpful and can't do enough for you. Eat in or takeaway, it's all good eating. Yum, yum

Just popped in here for a lunchtime snack and it was very pleasant. The service was friendly and our toasted sandwiches which were served with fries were very good. There is a good menu choice if you want something more substantial though and the meals being served looked really good. The place was spotlessly clean and prices very reasonable so would definitely return.

12/11/2024: We have passed this place a few times during the week and it always looks busy. The food looks good and it seems popular. It is on the main tourist run, but amongst all the others and no pressure to stop. On our last night, we decided to stop and sit here for drinks as it was a bit too early to eat. The service is impecable, fast friendly and a nice ambience with the music and they guys all busy with serving and the bbq going. We had two red wines and sat for about half an hour just relaxing and people watching. Wine was nice and total cost was £8.33 (converted by Monzo), which we didn't think was too bad. The table next to us had a hanging kebab which was cooked fresh in front of us and looked really good. We liked it.
13/09/2024: Realmente deseando un poco de auténtica comida portuguesa estilo tapas. Sorprendido por los precios en el menú para el tipo de punto de venta. Tanto la comida como la bebida era muy caro. La prueba está en la comida y ambas comidas eran muy sosas. No vale la pena precios premium en la calidad o ubicación de los alimentos. 2 miembros del personal estaban teniendo una pelea completa entre sí frente a los clientes.
